Hotels in Costa de la Luz

The ‘Coast of Light' is a sunny, sandy and beautiful holiday destination. On Spain's Andalucian side, the Costa de la Luz includes Cadiz. It's claimed that the sand on the coast's many beaches is even more golden than on the Costa del Sol.

Spanish and international holidaymakers alike use the hundreds of Costa de la Luz hotels. The area boasts an impressive 300 days of sunshine a year, so holidaymakers flock here all year round.

History and architecture

Venture within the walls of any of the Costa de la Luz's old towns to find ancient religious buildings and former watchtowers and fortresses.

British admiral Horatio Nelson led his troops to victory from Cape Trafalgar during the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar. The top of the cape's lighthouse is over 50m above sea level.

The Plaza de la Catedrale in Cadiz is named for the cathedral towering over it. Built in the 18th century, the cathedral has baroque, neoclassical and rococo design elements. If you climb to the top of the West Tower, you enjoy a panoramic view of the local area.

Food on the Costa de la Luz

Naturally for a coastal area, seafood is an important ingredient in many local dishes. A speciality in Cadiz is ‘gambas al ajillo' – prawns fried in garlic.

The most widely-known Andalusian food is gazpacho, the tomato and vegeSEOSITE_LEVEL_DESCRIPTION soup traditionally served cold. In hot dishes, fried fish is a common ingredient. Fried foods a la andaluza are coated only in flour, without egg or water to hold it together.

For dessert, try pestiños pastries coated liberally in honey.

Things to do

There are around 20 golf courses on the Costa de la Luz, from mini golf for all the family to professional-standard 18-hole courses.

One of the more unusual activities you can go on is a dolphin safari. The Foundation for Information and Research on Marine Mammals (FIRMM) offers tourist trips to fund their research. The dolphins can sometimes get as close as 100 metres away from the diving group.
