Hotels in Cordoba
Built in the late 16th century, Argentina's second city is a vibrant mix of old and new. It's nicknamed both La Docta – The Learned – for being the home of the country's oldest university, and the Nightlife City because of its myriad of clubs and bars.
Book one of our Córdoba hotels and explore a city with an intriguing past and happening present.
Córdoba is awash with colonial monuments dating from the Spanish occupation. The most prominent of these is probably the Jesuit Block and Estancias, made up of the university, a school, church and five farms. Jesuit reductions, as such settlements were known, were created to house the indigenous population so they could be governed more easily by the settlers and converted to Christianity.
The Cathedral of Córdoba is the main church of the archdiocese of Córdoba and the oldest church in continuous use in Argentina. The original cathedral was built in the early 17th century, but collapsed in 1677, when a new building was designed by a Jesuit architect.
Córdoba has a number of art museums. The Genaro Perez museum houses a collection of Argentinian and mostly Córdoba's paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries, which are displayed in chronological sections. The Evita Fine Arts museum, housed in an early 20th-century mansion, has 12 exhibit halls, a sculpture garden and a library, as well as an auditorium. There are more than 500 works here, including pieces by Goya and Picasso. The Emilio Caraffa Fine Arts museum, named after the Argentine post-Impressionist painter, contains paintings and sculpture by renowned local artists.
Córdoba also has several theatres, the main one being the Teatro del Libertador General San Martin, which hosts a regular programme of concerts, opera, plays and more.
Patio Olmos, the city's main mall, is housed in a former school building from the early 20th century. There are more than 150 shops here, selling Argentinian and international brands, as well as a multiplex cinema. More boutiques can be found along Rafael Nunez Avenue.
Sarmiento Park, next to the Evita Fine Arts museum, is the city's largest park, covering 17 hectares. Created in 1911 and named after a former Argentine president, the park's attractions include a rose garden and an indoor pool. There's also a zoo, with sections including marine life, big cats, spiders and scorpions, amphibians, reptiles, native species and native plants.
The affluent Cerro de Las Rosas neighbourhood has two more parks, the Parque de las Naciones and the Parque Autoctono – the latter is a nature reserve. And no trip to Córdoba would be complete without a riverside stroll along La Cañada.
Eating and drinking
Head to El Arrabal for regional specialities, but make sure you do so on a Friday or Saturday night, when dinner is combined with a tango show. There's also milongas – similar to tango – on Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays, salsa classes on Sundays, and tango classes every evening except Saturdays. Alternatively, pasta and an extensive dessert menu are on offer at La Mamma, or tuck into steak at Bar San Carlos. Afterwards, you can dance the night away at La Sala del Rey, where there's regular live cuarteto music.
