Hotels in Chaweng Beach
Chaweng Beach needs a lot of hotels, as it attracts a diverse range of people. The older wave of backpacker hostels and dorms is being gradually replaced by better quality hotels with more facilities. This means you have plenty of choice when booking your holiday.
Relaxing at Chaweng Beach
The beach is lined by coconut trees swaying in the wind, giving it a tropical ambience. Public paths and roads to the beach are few and far between – most of the time you'll access it directly from your hotel.
When the tide is low, it's possible to walk out to two small islands just off the coast. There's also a natural reef to admire.
Nightlife and partying on Ko Samui
The infamous Moon Party is on nearby Ko Pha-Ngan. On Ko Samui, there are special club nights and themed parties every day of the week.
Chaweng Beach has a range of bars and pubs, with most open until 2am. The main stretch is the Green Mango strip in town. Ark Bar Beach Club and Resort is by far the largest venue. Live music, firework displays and a restaurant with around 300 dishes help get the party started.
Most of the more energetic partygoers will head to the Chaweng Central area. However, it's easy to stay further out and avoid the crowds of clubbers if you'd prefer your nights a little quieter.
It's possible to find food from almost every country on Ko Samui – the island hosts an annual Fine Dining Festival. However, you can't complete a visit to Thailand without sampling some of the more regional dishes.
Meals are complex and carefully balance aroma with taste. It's common to shape sticky rice into a ball and dip it into your other dishes. Kaeng, or gaeng, is what we know as Thai curry. Chillies, garlic and onions are essential ingredients – the actual spiciness of the curry will depend on who makes it.
Sometimes, the food comes to you. Vendors with porSEOSITE_LEVEL_DESCRIPTION grills roam the beach with freshly cooked local BBQ. They don't hassle people – it's fine to respond with a polite ‘no, thank you' if you're not hungry.
