A walker's paradise

Whatever level of walking you are comfortable with, the area around Carlton will have a route suited to you. Just down the road in Aysgarth are a number of attractive circular walks which are ideal for getting the blood flowing. Nearby Richmond and Reeth, meanwhile, offer routes which range in distance from 1.5 to 12.5 miles. The best thing about these routes is that many are accessible by public transport, with Dalesbus organising proceedings.

More experienced walkers may wish to try the James Herriot Way. This route covers the area around Hawes, Keld, Reeth, Grinton and more, and is intended to take place over a number of days. If you're up to the challenge, this is an extremely rewarding way to make the most of the local scenery.

A thriving village pub

The Forester's Arms is the heartbeat of village life. Built in the early 19th century, it takes its name from the Coverdale Forester's Friendly Society, and has been in near-constant use right up until the present day. A popular local hub, the pub was purchased by the villagers in 2011.

Food at the pub comes in a variety of appealing forms, including sandwiches, warming winter dishes and a range of daily specials, many of which are sourced using local ingredients.

The Forester's Arms also functions as accommodation, with comfortable rooms providing all mod cons for guests, including flatscreen DVD TV and underfloor heating in the bathrooms. It's the perfect place for a relaxing atmosphere after a hard day's walking.
