Hotels in Capri
Capri is a beautiful island located in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the Sorrentine Peninsula. It can be found on the south side of the Gulf of Naples in the stunning Campania region of Italy.
No visit to Capri is complete without a sea tour, skirting the dramatic coastline and taking in the mysterious caves and coves. Organized tours are a great idea for all visitors, but an individual tour with private boat rental is ideal for travellers who have the time to enjoy a sea trip at their leisure. You can sail to the island of Ischia, famous for its thermal springs and volcanic mud, as well as to many other beautiful and interesting islands.
The Blue Grotto
The most famous sight on Capri, the Grotta Azzurra, is a marvel of nature. Just lie back and let yourself be carried through the metre-high cave mouth. Inside, pass from complete darkness into a sparkling cavern lit by azure blue light. The water is a crystalline blue with silver reflections, and visitors say the experience is like being ‘suspended in the heavens'.
Tours and excursions
Enjoy a tour of Capri, on which you can discover the wonderfully pure air laced with the scent of island flowers. See the delicate colours, the ancient past and the dramatically beautiful scenery along the way. You'll probably also visit Villa Jovis, the majestic Roman palace built by Emperor Tiberius and completed in 27 AD.
There are lots of places near Capri which you can visit in just a few hours. Take a trip to Naples across the water (under two hours by boat) and experience Naples underground, from the cloisters of St Chiara and St Gregorio Armeno to Spaccanapoli and the Museo di Capodimonte. There are many other beautiful views and attractions in Naples, just waiting for you to enjoy.
Pompei, two hours from Capri, is the city buried under the ashes of the erupting Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The city has now been expertly excavated to show buildings and even people buried alive, and it represents one of the most important archaeological sites in the world.
Food and nightlife
Capri's nightlife is not so much about discos and nightclubs as ‘taverne' – small clubs where locals and tourists gather together to dance the night away to an eclectic mix of live music. The most well-known is the celebrity-packed Anema e Core. While there, don't forget to try Capri's legendary limoncello, a sweet liqueur made with the island's lemons.
With no less than 167 restaurants, there's more than enough to satisfy even the fussiest of palettes. Some of the most famous foods of the island are ravioli Caprese (pasta parcels filled with ricotta, pecorino and marjoram) and torta Caprese (a wonderfully moist chocolate and almond cake, dusted with icing sugar).
Just one of the many outlets to choose from is the highly recommended Buonocore Gelateria which, as it says itself, serves ‘The best gelato EVER'.
