Hotels in Braintree

Braintree is a large town right in the heart of the county of Essex, in south-east England. The town has a long and fascinating history that stretches back to the Bronze Age. And, while many of its fellow Essex towns are famous for a different type of bronzing, Braintree has maintained its cultural identity and is a wonderful place to visit.

An intriguing past

A walk around Braintree is a perfect way to begin your exploration in to its colourful past. The magnificent former Town Hall stands in Market Square in the middle of town, so begin your journey here. The building has a splendid clock tower with the town's coat of arms lovingly inscribed beneath it. Pop inside and see the beautiful murals depicting scenes from Braintree's history.

Make sure your next stop is the Braintree District Museum, to continue your appreciation of the town. Don't be deterred by its setting, in the Courtauld School. The award-winning museum is anything but a chore. The permanent collections here tell the story of Braintree's evolution from an important wool-trading town to a prosperous centre of the silk trade. Displays include the finest Warner royal silks, Castle Hedingham pottery and Edward Bawden prints.

Make the future

After you have learnt about Braintree's past, gallop on in to its happy-go-lucky present. Slamseys Art is a great day out for all the family. Located in a lovely old barn just outside the town, they run creative workshops in arts and crafts such as printmaking and paper cutting. Slamseys also has an art gallery showcasing the work of local and international artists that is free entry.

If you'd prefer to leave the crafts to others, Blake House Craft Centre, in the middle of town, is one of the prettiest of its kind in the country. Once a farm, its former sSEOSITE_LEVEL_DESCRIPTIONs and cattle sheds have been transformed in to a lovely collection of arts and crafts shops, selling everything from designer clothes to bouquets of flowers. If the kids are getting restless, drop them off at the centre's nine-hole Mini Golf course and tour the shops in peace.

Brain food

Shopping and sightseeing can be hard work and you deserve some refreshment after so much time on your feet. Luckily Braintree is home to some excellent pubs and restaurants where you can reflect on a day of fun over a refreshing pint of wine. The Compasses at Pattiswick is a delightful gastropub, set in luscious countryside just outside Braintree. It serves up good-quality pub grub and has a great selection of ales and wines.

For some scrumptious home-cooked food a bit closer to the town centre, the Booking Hall Café is the answer. Sit outside on the platform in summer or by the warm log fire in winter. A bigger menu and more formal surroundings are available at the White Hart Hotel, right in the middle of town.

All in all Braintree's hotels offer a great alternative holiday destination and a wonderful base from which to explore the historic county of Essex.
