Hotels in Bosham

Bosham is a picturesque coastal village in West Sussex, a county in southern England. With a rich history and a gorgeous setting in Chichester harbour, the village is an idyllic place to spend a holiday. Book one of our Bosham hotels to discover picturesque cottages and stark natural beauty in abundance.

A rich tapestry

For those who like to imbue their holidays with a little learning, Bosham has much to offer if you are interested in English history. The site, ancient history buffs will be glad to hear, was occupied by Emperor Vespasian, who built a splendid villa at nearby Fishbourne. Fishbourne Roman Palace is a short drive away from Bosham and a must-visit. It remains amazingly intact and with the largest collection of mosaics in the UK, will keep you and the family fascinated for hours.

However, you don't need to travel out of Bosham to get a real sense of historical gravitas. Situated right next to Bosham Quay is the Holy Trinity Church, where it has stood since the 10th century. The church is steeped in history. Not only is it mentioned in the Domesday Book but it actually makes an appearance in the Bayeux Tapestry, as the backdrop for a meeting between Harold Godwinson and Edward the Confessor. Much of Holy Trinity still has its original Saxon architecture and is well worth a look round.

Arts and crafts

Now, it may be that mosaics and 10th-century churches are not really your idea of fun, and that's perfectly understandable. For, though it does not feature in the Bayeux Tapestry, Bosham Walk still deserves plaudits aplenty. This charming arcade, located in the village centre, is most famous for its arts and crafts shops, to which people flock from miles around.

The Arts and Crafts centre is spread out over two floors and contains 20 small shops, selling everything from vintage dungarees to handmade ceramics. Strolling through the arcade you can watch artists and craftsmen practicing their trade. There are also a number of courses held at the Studio at Bosham Walk, if you want to try your hand at some of the techniques you have seen on display.

If you'd rather leave it to the professionals, pick up a lovely handmade souvenir and head to Baileys Tea Rooms for some delectable homemade cakes and restorative cups of tea. Or, if you're after something more substantial, mosey on down to the Bosham Inn. The 19th-century building oozes rural charm and has an excellent selection of cask ales and fine wines, as well as some hearty, seasonal grub.

Special Scientific Interest

For those looking for a bit of natural beauty, Bosham has that in abundance too. Set in the achingly gorgeous surrounds of Chichester harbour, Bosham is partly in a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The wetlands here are bursting with wildlife and the area around the village is home to a number of species of wildfowl and waders. So grab some binoculars and head down to the waterfront at sunset, an unforgettable experience awaits.
