Hotels in Belper
Belper is a classic northern industrial town with its roots firmly embedded in the textile industry. The town is situated eight miles north of Derby in the valley of the River Derwent and has much in the way of industrial history. A wonderful town for visiting or using as a base for adventures further afield in Derby.
History
Traditionally, Belper's economy was reliant on the manufacturing industry and numerous goods were made in the town such as nails and other iron products. Cotton spinning and textile production were prevalent for much of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The large East Mill and the smaller North Mill are now all that remain of the industry and are preserved as part of the Derwent Valley Mills world heritage site.
Attractions
There is much to see and do in the Derbyshire area as a whole, and it is a popular destination for walking, cycling and horse riding. A great family day out can also be had at the famous Alton Towers Resort. Attractions local to Belper itself, however, are mainly industrial in design and include Heage Windmill.
The 18th-century windmill is the only surviving six-sailed stone-built windmill in the country and visitors can learn how the mill runs. Still in perfect working order, the mill produces flour which can be bought in the onsite shop.
Strutt's North Mill originally played a vital role in the Industrial Revolution and is of architectural and historic importance to the UK. Visitors can take a tour of the mill and learn much about its social, historic and industrial background.
Dining
Those looking for a good meal with great service in a pleasant location should try Angelo's Restaurant at The New Inn. Serving a varied selection of Italian, French and English cuisine, Angelo's award-winning menu shouldn't be missed. If a traditional English high tea is more your style then consider The Gatehouse Vintage Tearoom, housed inside a listed mill. The tearoom also joins a vintage furniture and gift shop too, for a quick browse after tea.
Also worth a mention is the popular Ambergate Chip Shop where, aside from the normal fish and chip fare, one can also discover weekly specials, and a selection of gluten-free products.
