Hotels in Bedale
Bedale, ‘the heart of north Yorkshire', is a market town mentioned in the Domesday Book. At the centre of some of Yorkshire's finest scenery, our Bedale hotels offer a wonderful base from which to explore.
History
The 12th-century church, St Gregory's, has been named as one of Britain's best, and the Domesday Survey in 1085 records a stone church on the site. Some elements of Saxon carving can still be seen in the crypt below the chancel, as well as in the nave. Although Bedale itself dates back to medieval times and beyond, its heyday was in the late 18th century, which is reflected in the elegant Georgian buildings lining the market square.
Wensleydale railway
The marvellous Wensleydale railway offers a special way to explore the surrounding countryside. Take the steam train 16 miles through stunning scenery to the Yorkshire Dales National Park and Bolton Castle. This breathtaking area inspired the artist Turner and was the setting for the TV series ‘All Creatures Great and Small.' A fantastic value Rover ticket gives you railway freedom for £17 per adult, £14.50 per senior citizen and £1 for a child.
Thorp Perrow arboretum
Thorp Perrow is the ultimate family day out, incorporating the opportunity to learn more about birds of prey and wildlife with hands-on experience. Witness the breathtaking ability of eagles, falcons, hawks, vultures and owls from all over the world in demonstrations, and meet young owls and falcons hatched through the breeding programme. The Mammal Centre is open every day, with Meerkat Island and Walk through Wallaby Wood naming just a few of the attractions. Set in 85 acres of beautiful woodland and lakes with new equipment in the children's playground, it's a great day out.
The Forbidden Corner
Have a day out with a difference and visit The Forbidden Corner in Coverham. It's a unique labyrinth of tunnels, chambers and surprises created in a four-acre garden in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. Statues blink at you, paths lead nowhere, skeletons lurk in underground chambers and a temple hides behind interesting landscapes. Your job is to work your way through the maze. Unique, different and just scary enough to give everyone a thrill.
Shopping
With its cobbled streets and market place, Bedale is full of unique shops offering everything from jewellery and antiques to custom-made furniture, women's fashion, china and gifts. With a plethora of diverse food outlets, foodies are well catered for too. Wensleydale cheese is a local speciality, as are Yorkshire beers and real dairy ice cream from dales herds.
Where to eat
With a surprisingly diverse selection of restaurants, cafés and pubs, you'll be sure to find what you are looking for. Bedale offers delicious Indian food at the Taste of India, Market Place, and at the Green Dragon Inn on High Road, you will experience great tasting, well-presented, locally sourced food. At the Wyville Arms in Leyburn, you can expect fine food and atmospheric bars well stocked with locally brewed beers.
A wonderfully atmospheric and historic little town, Bedale has so much to offer, so come to Bedale!
