Barnet is a hilly, suburban area of north London. Bordered by countryside but with easy access to the city's centre, Barnet offers an excellent, inexpensive base from which to explore London and the surrounding area.

Semi-rural charm

Barnet is a great spot from which to visit the English countryside, with Hertfordshire in walking distance if you're feeling adventurous. However, you don't need to trek far to find natural beauty. Brent Reservoir, or Welsh Harp as it is locally known, contains a nature reserve at which many quintessentially British birds make their home. Amateur ornithologists, or those with some good binoculars, can spot great crested grebes and grey herons among the fens.

For those who enjoy more rigorous outdoor pursuits, the nature reserve is also a great place to go for a bike ride. Bring a picnic and find a great spot for a scenic lunch. If you want to get wet, the reservoir also accommodates a wide variety of watersports. Kayaks and canoes can be rented from the Phoenix Canoe Club on the reservoir.

If you're after a more conventional stroll, or if the kids are getting restless, Victoria Recreation Ground has great amenities for all. Kids will love the playground, football pitches, tennis and basketball courts while you can enjoy the beautiful flower beds and ample open space.

Golfing days

There is golf-related fun for all the family in Barnet, with courses catering for all ages and experience levels. For those dab hands, Old Fold Manor Golf Club has one of the best ranges in the UK, designed by one of the greatest golf course architects of all time.

If you're no Tiger Woods, but still like a bit of a challenge, East Barnet Pitch-Putt is great for novices and for those thinking of taking the step up. And then there's Dinosaur Safari Adventure Golf. Featuring 18 holes hidden among real-size replicas of dinosaurs, this is an unforgettable and fun-packed day for all ages.

Shop till you drop

A little retail therapy never hurt anybody and Barnet is close to one of the biggest shopping malls in London. Brent Cross shopping centre was the first large indoor mall of its kind when it was built in 1976, and it still caters to all your retail needs. It houses many well-known international names and brands, including that famous British department store, John Lewis.

After working up a healthy appetite, there are plenty of food outlets in the centre, as well as a multi-screen cinema where you can watch the latest blockbuster after a hard day's shopping.
