Barnard Castle is an historic market town in Teesdale, County Durham in north-east England. With a history dating back to the Norman era and, of course, its magnificent castle, the town is popular with tourists all year round. However, it's not just historic charm that attracts them. The Castle

The ruins of the castle which gives its name to the town loom imposingly over the River Tees. But don't be deterred by its spooky silhouette. A tour of Barnard Castle is an excellent day out for all the family. Built to deter would-be Scottish aggressors, the castle repelled many a foe and was once in the possession of King Richard III.

It fell into disrepair in the 17th century and today all that remains are the eerie remnants of the great hall, the castle's keep and its impressive round tower. It's not hard to see why Sir Walter Scott was inspired to write his epic poem Rokeby while looking up at its medieval ramparts. There's an excellent picnic area among the ruins, perfect for a midday break.

Jewel in the crown

On your way back to town, visit the real jewel in Barnard Castle's crown. The castle steals the limelight from what many locals will tell you is the real reason to visit the area, the Bowes Museum, often said to have the finest collection of European art in the north of England. With paintings by the likes of El Greco, Goya, Canaletto and Boucher, art buffs won't disagree. Not only are there sublime works on display, the museum itself is housed within an enchanting 19th-century, French-inspired château.

After you've admired the famous 18th-century ‘Silver Swan automaton', enjoy a delicious lunch or cream tea at Café Bowes. Be sure to pick up a memento of your fantastic day at the lovely museum shop and then take a stroll in the museum's fabulous 22-acre garden.

Arts and crafts

If you're after a dose of modernity, stop in at the NeST Art Gallery and café, closer to the town centre. You don't just have to stand and stare here. The artists and curators who run the gallery hold regular arts and crafts workshops for people of all ages. If you need a bit of a sit down, their café serves snacks and has a licensed bar and great coffee.

Get off your feet

Barnard Castle is an art lover's paradise, with The Witham arts centre another must-see for local crafts and sumptuous paintings. But there's plenty on offer in town for those whose idea of fun is more bacon sarnie than Francis Bacon.

Penny's Tearooms in the town centre is a delightfully quaint spot to get sweet or savoury snacks any time of the day. For dinner, Spice Island restaurant serves up a tantalising array of authentic Indian dishes, made using locally sourced ingredients. Cool your mouth down afterwards at the 17th-century Old Well Inn with one of their award-winning ales or something from their excellent wine list. And if you want traditional British pub grub, they have that too.
