Hotels in Bansko

Bansko is a scenic town in south-western Bulgaria. Its location at the foot of the magnificent Pirin Mountain has made Bansko a popular ski resort. But there's much more to the town than just its slopes.

Mehanas

Bansko has some wonderful old buildings and the amazingly fresh mountain air means it's always lovely taking a walk around the town. When you get hungry, pop in to one of the hundred or so mehanas in the town. Mehanas are traditional Bulgarian taverns, where people come together to eat, drink and sing.

Try Mehana Momini Dvori for a more modern take on the local cuisine. The aubergine breaded yellow cheese veal skewers may be a mouthful to say, but they're even more of a delicious mouthful to taste!

Winter wonderland

Bansko is of course most famous as a ski resort, with many winter sports fans flocking here for its excellent slopes and competitive prices. Ski Bansko is the main resort and it has great lifts up to the peaks. Such is the size of the resort that, even after two weeks here, you'll not be skiing the same slopes.

If you love speeding through the snow but would prefer a motor did the hard work, you can rent a snowmobile from Snowline Motors. These exhilarating machines come with English-speaking instructors and guides who know the area like the backs of their gloves.

After a tiring day on the slopes, there are plenty of places to have a relaxing or raucous après-ski, depending on your preference. Most of these are located on Pirin Street in the middle of the town.

Pirin Street

Bansko's main street is lined with bars, coffee shops, boutiques and restaurants. Pop in to the Mehana Bansko, which is open late and serves up lovingly cooked authentic food. Make sure you try the rabbit stew, and whether you're a beer or a wine fan, they have delicious local variants of each in abundance.

If you love the social side of skiing, Happy End is one of Bansko's most popular nightclubs. Sip on a cocktail and shimmy on down with hundreds of revellers.

Rila Monastery

Go off-piste slightly with a day trip to the Monastery of Saint Ivan of Rila. It's about a three-hour drive from Bansko but is well worth the journey. Located deep in the lush Rilska Valley, the monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the largest in Bulgaria.

Established in 927, it is one of Bulgaria's most beautiful and important cultural monuments, and is even depicted on the country's banknotes. While the day away gazing at the monastery's beautiful frescoes and wandering its many courtyards and cloisters. Inside the monastery museum is Rafail's Cross, a small wooden cross covered in 104 religious scenes and 650 miniature figures. A trip to Rila will leave you feeling awe-inspired at both the magnificent and the minute.

Bansko hotels are an ideal base for ski lovers, but skiing is not the town's only attraction. It has culture and fun in abundance and is a first-class alternative holiday destination.
