Hotels in Faro

Faro is the main city of the famous Algarve region in southern Portugal. Known primarily as a party town in the summer, the city is quieter during the other seasons. With so much to do in and around Faro, it is an excellent base from which to explore this beautiful region.

Cidade Velha

As with most places, the best way to see Faro is on foot. A stroll through its whitewashed streets on a cool afternoon is a truly sensuous experience. One quirk that motoring enthusiasts will immediately notice is the presence of many interesting and rare cars in the city. Due to its narrow streets a lot of these vehicles are tiny and the site of them, all bombing around town, will not fail to leave you smiling.

Make sure you walk through Cidade Velha, the Old Town, just off the harbour. The area has some of the finest 18th-century Portuguese and Moorish architecture you will find anywhere. With virtually no signs of modernity, a walk through the Old Town's streets really is a journey back in time.

For a dose of the macabre, pop in to the catacombs at the Igreja do Carmo Church. Known as the Capela dos Ossos, the chapel is decorated with the skeletal remains of over 1,200 former monks. A word of warning, this is not for the faint-hearted.

Sun, fun, sea and sand

Of course, if you are coming to Faro because of its relaxed beaches and great nightlife, you will not be disappointed. The best beach in the area is probably Praia de Faro. Its several kilometres of sand rarely gets crowded, even in the middle of the summer, and the sea here is deep, clean and cool. If you have a late flight home and an early hotel check-out, the beach is right next to Faro Airport and so is the ideal spot to get that last bit of sea and sun before you leave.

If you're after a dance, and a few cocktails, the main hub of Faro's famous nightlife is around the Hotel Faro. Bora Bar is a local favourite, offering up excellent music and cheap drinks most nights of the week, the perfect combination for guaranteed fun. Another popular spot with locals and tourists alike is the Upa Upa Café Bar. Its spacious patio is an excellent place for people-watching with a cool glass of rosé.

The Algarve

One of our Faro hotels would make a superb base from which to traverse the exceedingly beautiful Algarve region. The ancient cities of Silves and Lagos are particularly worth a mention as both are brimming with things to see and do.

If you're feeling adventurous, take a boat trip up the Rio Formosa, a nature reserve that straddles the Spanish border. There is a boat that leaves from a jetty next to the Old Town and includes a stop off on a secluded island beach. The achingly stunning surroundings will have you sighing wistfully from the deck.
