Nestling on the Costa Blanca, Benidorm is a fun resort known for its sun, sea and sand as well as a lively nightlife, but that's not all there is to it. Benidorm has long been known as a fun holiday destination, with its combination of glorious beaches, towering hotels and busy nightclubs lending it a reputation as a spot for dedicated hedonists. Things have calmed down in recent years, with some of the more excessive partiers turning their attentions more to Ibiza and Magaluf, and Benidorm is now an ideal location for family holidays. It's not all sand and skyscrapers either; the Sierra Haldada borders the town and is ideal for a hike through the beautifully rugged landscape. While the nightlife is still boisterous, these days it's more family oriented, and the town's now a nice place to go and eat when the sun goes down thanks to its charming restaurants and tapas places. Think you know Benidorm? Think again!
Think of Benidorm and you think of beaches. The resort is justly famous for its two long golden stretches of sand Poniente and Levante. Both are well appointed for families and feature many amenities; foot showers, parasols, playgrounds and toilets all add up to an easy family day at the beach. A small cove Cala Mal Pas separates the two big beaches and offers a more relaxed, quieter atmosphere. For the more active, two other coves Cala Tio Ximo and Cala Almadrava lie further away and offer exceptional swimming in the crystal clear waters.
Benidorm is, of course, famed for its nocturnal attractions. But less known is that in amongst the pubs, bars and nightclubs there are also a number of exceptional restaurants. Restaurant Llum del Mar and Son de MAR offer high-quality gourmet cooking and locals rate the traditional Spanish food at La Cava Aragonesa and Bar Mal Pas. This is merely scratching the surface -- Benidorm is now a serious location for foodies.
Despite its association with package holidays, Benidorm has recently been attracting a more affluent sort of tourist, and the presence of a couple of five star hotels reflects this. The opulent Villa Venecia in the old town has sweeping sea views, wonderfully appointed rooms and an excellent restaurant. The luxury hotel The Level is an adults-only hotel with fully inclusive service, its own lagoon pool and golf course.
