Country and western
For a thorough and fascinating journey through the history of country music, visit the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Even if you're not a fan of the genre, you'll still appreciate the exhibits reflecting, for example, Bob Dylan's Nashville sessions. The museum includes historic RCA Studio B which has seen the likes of Elvis Presley, the Everly Brothers, Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson recording there. Listen to original recordings and see clothes worn by the artists, as well as a selection of Elvis' cars.
Another titan of country, Johnny Cash has a whole museum devoted to him. The Johnny Cash Museum charts the Man in Black's life right back to his childhood. See old school reports, handwritten lyrics, videos, gold records and much more.
Winner of two Grammy's and many other awards, Barbara Mandrell is a country music legend. To see how a Nashville star lives, visit Fontanel Mansion, Mandrell's former residence. It may not be to everyone's taste but this extravagant homestead – containing, among other things, an indoor pool and an indoor shooting range – is something to behold.
If you've got a spare hour and don't mind being locked in a room with a handful of family or friends, then The Escape Game could be just for you. This unusual experience encourages lateral thinking and teamwork to solve a series of clues before the clock strikes zero. You have 60 minutes. Go!
Opry Mills shopping mall has a huge food court and a host of stores – It's very big so bring comfortable shoes. For a fine selection of boutiques and high-end stores, head over to The Mall at Green Hills. And for the chance to find an unexpected bargain, Nashville Flea Market is a good bet.
No self-respecting country music fan should miss Boot Country, a store that has one of the best selections of cowboy boots you're ever likely to see. And for a record store with a difference, Ernest Tubb takes some beating. It's a record shop and museum and it has a bus in it!
Entertainment, eating and drinking
