When you book hotels near Alton Towers, the resort itself will probably consume most of your time, and there's a lot to do.

The park has 12 themed zones, including the Dark Forest, X Sector, Mutiny Bay, and the family-friendly CBeebies Land. Major rides include Nemesis, Congo River Rapids, Galactica, and Nemesis, and there are 37 rides in total. Dining options are scattered across the park, offering everything from steakhouse grills, to pizzas, Italian cuisine, and fish and chips.

All of that is in addition to the waterpark, which is right next door, woodland lodges in the Enchanted Village, and the Extraordinary Golf mini-golf complex.

Do's and don'ts when visiting

There's a lot to work through if you want to enjoy full value from your admission ticket, so plan ahead and make a rough route of the rides you really want to experience.

If you take lunch early, you may well be able to ride some of the busier attractions while other visitors are eating.

Using the theme park's own app is a good way to keep track of queue times, while making it much easier to navigate the many zones.

Staying at cheap hotels near Alton Towers can help you enjoy as many rides as possible. Most visitors leave around 4:00 pm, but if you're staying on-site, you can wait until closing and enjoy shorter queues.

When to go

School holidays are periods to avoid. So try to book vacations in early summer (June and early July are good), or mid-September. You may be able to mix waterpark and theme park attractions, and there will generally be more space.

Halloween is a fun time to visit, as the Scarefest event takes place. On selected days in October, the park is given over to terrifying characters and it opens later than usual, offering chilling night-time experiences.

Santa arrives in December, along with festive pantomimes. And the park is open all year-round, making it an appealing time for a family escape.
