Holidays to Doha
Doha is the capital of Qatar and situated in the beautiful Doha Bay. Surrounding the waterfront, you will find a selection of well laid out parks and the promenade, while the traditional markets offer a special glimpse into the region’s culture.
Doha is one of the newest supercities in the world, mirroring the energy of some of the great American cities but with a distinctive location in the Middle East. Since Qatar became independent in 1971 the city has gone from strength to strength, with a population that has grown massively in the last 30 years. Named the Arab Capital of Culture in 2010, you can explore its full history by visiting the Qatar National Museum, which is housed in the original ruler’s palace. Doha plays host to a number of international festivals and competitions, including the Qatar Open tennis, the Asian Games in 2006 and the Doha Tribeca Film Festival in 2010. In 2022 it will play a key role as Qatar host the Football World Cup.
Culture and tradition
The best way to discover the true heritage and culture of Doha is by taking a trip to the Al Zubarah Fort and Museum, one of the oldest in the region. The fascinating history and architecture of the region highlights the wealth of the ancient civilisation that once occupied Qatar. In Doha Fort you will find a selection of exhibitions showcasing the traditional handcrafts, fishing boats, ornaments and other items that used to make up daily life.
The shopping in Doha is all about the experience. Whether you head for the modern malls or the traditional markets, you’ll be swept along by the huge amount of variety on offer. Follow the intriguing alleyways, lanes and walkways of the Gold Souq and Souq Waqif where you will find a wide selection of spices, jewellery, textiles and other local specialities.
All Doha holidays need to incorporate a trip into the desert. On an organised safari you can admire the beauty of the vast landscape from the comfort of a 4x4 truck, before stopping at the Bedouin style tents. Then you can jump into a sand buggy and zoom around the dunes and across the sand mountains. Next stop is the inland sea, where the crystal-clear blue water provides a dramatic contrast to the golden desert.
Activities for everybody
As well as topping up your tan in front of the pool, Doha offers a range of fantastic activities to get involved in, regardless of how old you are. From jet skiing and kayaking to fishing and golf, there’s a whole range of things to get stuck into. The Doha Golf Club is especially popular with groups, where you can play a round before enjoying some food in the clubhouse afterwards. Camel racing is also a unique spectacle at the Al Shahaniya racetrack.
