Istria holidays

Are you looking to discover the next tourist paradise before the crowds descend? Lusting after sunshine, edifying culture and a break from your fast paced lifestyle? If so, Istria is the place to visit this year. Imagine vast expanses of unspoiled beauty, delicious cuisine and a balmy climate – and you’re almost there.

Perfect for romantic breaks, family, and group holidays, Istria is an idyllic holiday spot that benefits from stunning blue waters, dramatic scenery and a relaxed Mediterranean approach to, well, just about everything.

Home to premium beer, a love of folklore and an abundance of green rolling hills, Istria’s lands are begging to be frolicked upon. Brimming with medieval towns and history lessons a plenty: regale your friends with tales of shipyards, amphitheatres and ice-cream coloured buildings, good enough to eat.

Boasting an expansive rugged coastline, Istria provides the perfect balance of city and coast, with plenty of sports and attractions to keep even the most restless of travellers entertained. If you like your beach with lagoons, islands and a little rock climbing holidays to Istria will not disappoint.

Please note: Resort taxes may be applicable, more information about this can be found on individual property pages.

Discover five of Istria’s most intriguing locations

• Built like many fortified towns in Istria, Motovun is a mediaeval settlement situated high in the sweeping valley above the Mirna River. Forage in the famous Motovun wood, where you’ll find some of the best truffles in the world.

• Active holidaymakers, with a head for heights, will enjoy the numerous hiking trails that Istria boasts. One of the best is routed along the forested slopes of the Cicarija plateau leading to Ucka, the largest Istrian mountain and nature reserve. Rest weary limbs along the way with a spot of bird spotting; gaze upon the griffon vulture and the golden eagle.

• Pula is a town that perfectly juxtaposes the old and new. After shopping in narrow, cobbled streets visitors will come across the sixth-largest surviving Roman amphitheatre. Make like Russell Crowe in Gladiator in front of an imaginary audience of 23,000 – a reason to holiday in Istria if ever there was one.

• Only registering 17 people in the 2001 census, Hum, which lies to the north, is the Guinness World Record holder for the smallest town in the world. Venture inside the defensive walls and count by how many the population has grown.

• The entire town of Roc is considered to be an important cultural monument, due to its well preserved city walls which date back to the Middle Ages. With a Roman Lapidarium, a Venetian cannon and a functional watchtower, it’s the ideal place for history buffs.
