Budapest

Budapest is a capital city with a youthful atmosphere and is nicknamed the Paris of the East, due to its scenic setting on the River Danube. One of the most popular attractions in the city is the Buda Castle. The castle has UNESCO World Heritage status and is built on the southern tip of Castle Hill. Throughout its history the castle has been destroyed and rebuilt an incredible six times. Today, the castle is home to a fascinating collection of museums and galleries. The Budapest History Museum is located in the castle’s southern wing, and explores Budapest's history from its early beginnings to the present day.

A great way to relax after spending a day walking around the sights is with a visit to Budapest’s famous thermal baths. There are several thermal bath locations to choose from and many offer extra treatments like massages and steam baths.

Lake Balaton

The biggest lake in central Europe, Lake Balaton is a wonderful place to take a relaxing holiday. The lake is a lovely place to swim with summer water temperatures reaching as high as 29˚C. If you’re visiting in summer you might get the chance to watch or even take part in the special cross-the-lake swimming contest which has competitors ranging from 8 to 80 years old. The lake also has a great selection of water sports on offer, including sailing and the more adrenaline-pumping kite surfing.

Hollókő

The small village of Hollókő is a less tourist-visited destination than the lake or the capital, but has a fascinating history for you to explore. The village is located in a tranquil valley and is home to a beautiful 13th-century castle. Standing on its cliff top perch, the castle is only a short walk from the centre of the village and offers some breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. The village is also home to an excellent restaurant, the Muskátli Vendéglő, which serves traditional local cuisine accompanied by live music.
