Tallinn

The capital city of Estonia is a beautiful medieval city, with its old town protected with World Heritage status. The best way to see all the main sights Tallinn has to offer is with a specially designed bus tour. The tours are run in a hop-on, hop-off style which means you can get off and explore if anywhere grabs your interest. The tours also have full-commentary guides which give you fascinating insights into the history of the city.

If you want to explore more of Tallinn’s intriguing history then you should visit the Bastion Tunnels. Created in the 1670s, the military tunnels run underneath the walls of the city and there’s a specially created train ride which guides you through their depths.

Tallinn is also a brilliant city if you want to experience some art. The Kadriorg Palace was built for Catherine I of Russia but today is home to the Art Museum of Estonia. The gallery has an amazing collection of Estonian art dating from the Middle Ages through to the present day. The museum also has a wonderful gift shop which sells some unique souvenirs for you to take home.

Nature and wildlife

Estonia has some excellently preserved countryside that hasn’t been blighted by the urbanisation of most countries. In fact 50% of Estonia is covered in forests. An excellent place to visit is the Jävselja nature conservation area. The reserve offers the unique opportunity to see forests that haven't been tampered with by humans. Make sure you check out the lichen, which hangs down in beautiful plumes from many of the trees. The best way to explore the reserve is by following the hiking trail.

Another great way to discover the Estonian countryside is on horseback. The Kalaoja Farm offers guided horseback rides along forest trails that last about two hours. If you’re feeling really adventurous you can a take trip that lasts three days.
