Further inland lies the capital of Costa Dorada, Tarragona, a historical town notable for its archaeological sites including a classic amphitheatre and the remains of a roman circus that once held chariot races. Having such a temperate climate, Costa Dorada has vineyards in abundance producing some fine fruity red wines and much of the country’s celebratory fizz, Cava. So take advantage of this and sample them alongside some of the local specialities such as xato, a fish dish in one Tarragona’s many inexpensive restaurants knowing that such indulgences can be atoned for the next day in Tarragona’s beautiful hilltop Cathedral.
