On your arrival to the city you'll see just how picturesque Bologna is. Almost the entire city is built in shades of brown and red making for some gorgeous cityscapes. From the outside you'll notice tall towers and impressive domes over the typical European style of buildings.
The Piazza Maggiore is where much of the city's activity goes on. Here you'll find a range of cafés, bars and restaurants depending what you feel like doing. As you walk around the city, this is a great starting point.
The two towers of Bologna are the most impressive buildings in the city. Torre Asinelli and Torre Garisenda were built in the 11th century and still attract visitors today. If you feel like a climb you can visit the top of Torre Asinelli and look out across the rolling Italian countryside and pretty town beneath you.
History
Bologna University is considered to be the oldest University in the whole of the Western World. The University still operates today, making Bologna a relaxed town with a positive student influence. The city is known to have existed since at least 1,000BC which provides a huge amount of history to be investigated on your trip there. The City Archaeological Museum is comprised of a large variety of exhibits that keep it entertaining for kids, with Ancient Greek and Egyptian displays often featured.
For a museum experience that's a little different you can visit Museo Civico d'Arte Industriale e Quadreria Davia Bargellini. As the name suggests, this is a more Italian trip in general. The museum is within an impressive palace guarded by two sculptures of the mythical character Atlas. Once inside you'll see a whole host of regal and lavish decorations from years gone by in this beautiful Italian city.
