A great way to start your trip to Croatia’s capital city is with a walking tour. The tours last one and a half hours and are led by local expert guides. The tours take in all the city’s top attractions like Zagreb Cathedral, the Lotrščak Tower, and the Galerija Klovićevi Dvori art museum. The Lotrščak Tower was built in the 13th century, and if you climb to the top you’ll be rewarded with excellent 360˚ views of the city. The tower also has the exciting event of a canon being fired, which has taken place every day at noon for the last hundred years.
If you’re an art lover a brilliant place to visit is the Museum of Contemporary art, which is often abbreviated to MSU. The gallery was originally established in 1954 and is home to a permanent collection of 620 works of art, half of which are by Croatian artists. A great piece of art you won’t want to miss is the Double Slide by the Belgian artist, Carsten Holler. The work is brilliant as you are allowed to ride the slide yourself, so it’s a really fun way to experience some art.
Bookworms will love the book-themed café Booksa. The Café is a popular destination for all the most creative locals and is a great place to relax with a cup of coffee. The Café has its own library of books for you to browse and even plays host to some English-language readings.
A short 30-minutes’ walk from the city centre will bring you to the beautiful Mirogoj Cemetery. The cemetery was created in 1876 and designed by the architect Herman Bollé. It really is a beautiful and tranquil place to visit, with its many sculptures and uniquely designed tombs.
