Things to do in Toronto

The city of Toronto stretches out along the banks of Lake Ontario, covering a huge area of more than 100km2. It's probably best known for landmarks such as the world-renowned Niagara Falls and iconic structures like the CN Tower.

Art and culture are understandably a huge part of life in Toronto and so a trip to the Art Gallery of Ontario is certainly worth your while. The Design Exchange is the only museum in the country dedicated to the preservation of design heritage, while the Bata Shoe Museum offers a unique look at the world of footwear.

If you're travelling with youngsters for a short break in Toronto, consider a visit to the Wonderland theme park, home to more than 200 attractions and 65 thrilling rides. If you're in the mood to escape the city streets, why not make for one of the 11 designated swimming beaches, where you'll be able to enjoy a picnic, take a dip in the water or perhaps fit in a game of beach volleyball.

Niagara Falls city break

During a city break in Toronto, one of the most unforgettable excursions is a visit to the magnificent Niagara Falls, just a short drive away. Begin your day with a scenic journey to the falls, where you can marvel at the thunderous cascades of water from multiple viewpoints. For an immersive experience, hop aboard the iconic boat tour that takes you right up to the misty base of the Horseshoe Falls.

Music festivals

Music fans will want to make sure they time their visit so it coincides with one of the many summer festivals that take place in Toronto every year. June's North by Northeast festival is the sister event to Austin's South by Southwest festival. It encompasses everything from music and film to art and comedy.

Established in 1987, the TD Toronto Jazz Festival offers the chance to hear world-class musicians come together in the city. There are typically more than 350 performances over a 10-day period. August's OVO Fest meanwhile is one for lovers of rap and hip hop.

Food and drink

Thanks to the mix of cultures in the city, there's also an incredible variety of food and drink to taste during your city break. Whatever style of cuisine or experience you're looking for, you'll find it in Toronto. Head to Little Italy to find family-run restaurants serving pizza, gnocchi and linguine to die for. Perhaps try Kensington Market for vegan cuisine, authentic Middle Eastern dishes and gourmet burgers.

Winter city break

If you’re considering visiting Toronto during winter, you’re in for a treat—it’s magical when covered in snow! Wrap up warm and stroll through Nathan Phillips Square, where you can try ice skating beneath the twinkling lights and the iconic Toronto sign. The city’s parks, like High Park or Trinity Bellwoods, transform into peaceful snowy escapes, perfect for a crisp winter walk during your city break. If you’re feeling adventurous, head to the nearby Don Valley for some cross-country skiing or sledging fun. And don’t forget to cosy up in one of Toronto’s many cafes afterwards with a hot chocolate or a steaming bowl of poutine. It’s a winter wonderland you won’t want to miss!
