Marrakech

See the majestic Koutoubia Mosque, visit the elaborately decorated Saadian Tombs, and spend some time admiring the scenic exotic vegetation of the Majorelle Garden. For some fabulous souvenir shopping, head to the Jemaa el-Fnaa market, or wander around the ruins of the late 16th-century El Badi Palace before visiting the stupendous late 19th-century Bahia Palace.

Popular value-for-money hotels in Marrakech include the Riad Dar Dialkoum and the Riad Les Trois Mages, although if you're looking for high-end accommodation, consider Maison MK or Riad Dar Anika.

Tangier

See the opulent Dar el Makhzen palace, the venue for the Museum of Moroccan Arts, or take a day trip to the nearby Cape Malabata, a dramatic rocky cape that is just 15 miles from the southernmost point of Spain. If you have the time, you could also visit the charismatic American Legation, which celebrates Morocco's long-standing diplomatic relations with the United States and is housed in a charismatic Moorish-style early 19th-century building.

For romantic, deluxe accommodation in Tangier, you could book the boutique La Maison Blanche or the Golden Tulip Farah Hotel, or choose the budget-friendly Mnar Castle Hotel Apartments or Solazur Business & Spa.

Rabat

See the awe-inspiring medieval fortress of Chellah, observe the astounding 12th-century Hassan Tower minaret, or visit the historic Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the man who pioneered Morocco's independence movement in the 1950s.

If you're looking for budget-friendly accommodation, you could book the Riad Dar El Kebira or Dar Zouhour, or choose the exquisite, luxury Villa Diyafa Boutique Hotel and Spa.

Tetouan

See some fascinating prehistoric and ancient relics at the Archaeological Museum, visit the magnificent Hispano-Moorish-themed Medina, and sample some delicious snacks at the Souk District. Tetouan is also noted for its Ethnography Museum and is known for its charming Ville Nouvelle area, featuring many romantic cafés and attractive whitewashed buildings.

Popular Tetouan hotels include the enchanting and affordable Riad El Reducto, Blanco Riad Hotel, or the Club Med Yasmina.

Fes

Visit the beautifully restored 17th-century Ibn Danan Synagogue, and don't forget to save some time for the Medersa Bou Inania, a stupefying Merenid site founded in the 14th century. Often nicknamed the 'Mecca of the West', Fes is also revered for its early medieval Fes el Bali area, which is the location of the University of al-Qarawiyyin. For accommodation, you can book the exclusive Riad Laaroussa or the value-for-money Riad Ahlam or Dar Attajalli.
