Unsurprisingly, Bordeaux is sometimes called the world capital of wine. When on your cheap Bordeaux holiday give your taste buds a treat and visit Ecole du Vin (Bordeaux Wine School). On one of the school’s fascinating classes (which are taught in English) you’ll learn all about the different wines from the area, including their origins and how best to appreciate them.
Or, if you want to get out and see the sights during your wine tasting, why not book a half day tour with Rustic Vines? You’ll get to visit local chateaus and walk around the vineyards, learning about the process behind the wonderful drink.
Squares and Statues
One of the largest city squares in Europe, stroll around 19th century Place des Quinconces. A few of our favourite monuments are the magnificent white-marble sculptures of Montaigne and Montesquieu and the bronze statue portraying Liberty at the top of The Girondist Column in the square’s centre.
For a breath-taking view of the city, climb the steps of the Basilica of St Michael Bell Tower, a Flamboyant Gothic church built in the 14th century, from where you’ll be able to see the entire city and the surrounding area.
Rent a bicycle and ride along some of the numerous cycle paths besides the Garonne River to take in some of the inspirational landscapes of the south of France, full of lush valleys and picturesque vineyards.
To start the day off right, eat at Creperie les Charrettes and order a mouth-watering pancakes, which will be cooked before your eyes. And they also serve delicious barista-made coffee; the perfect pick-me-up after an evening’s wine sampling.
For a snack, join the locals and head to Marche des Capucins on the weekend. The market’s oysters are highly recommended, particularly when washed down with a glass of white wine.
In the evening, we recommend La Tupina, which creates delicious French and modern cuisine using local produce, or, if it’s a romantic setting you’re after, book a table at Jean Ramet with its relaxing and candle-lit atmosphere.
Shopping in the Triangle
If you saved some cash booking a cheap holiday in Bordeaux, why not treat yourself with a bit of retail therapy? Head to Triangle d’Or (The Golden Triangle), where you’ll find a wealth of world-famous brands, such as Rolex and Hugo Boss.
Stroll along Rue Sainte Catherine, one of the longest pedestrianized streets in France, and browse the shelves of both high-street names and unique boutique.
