London’ s rich theatre history
Although the first purpose-built London theatres were found in East London and Southwark, the history of West End theatre can be traced all the way back to the 17th century, with the opening of the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane in 1663. The current building to hold that name is the fourth, and was opened in 1812. Many of the London’s West End theatres date back to the 19th or early 20th centuries, and are often filled with lavish neo-classical and art deco features. Today, Theatreland is home to almost 40 theatres, and continues to go from strength-to-strength, with a record breaking 14.5 million London theatre tickets sold in 2013.
