It's not so much a case of blowing our own trumpet as applauding all of our customers who have supported our carbonwise scheme. Since its inception in November last year, ten percent of you have decided to offset the carbon emissions from your flight.
Put simply, the emissions offset are equivalent to*:
The weight of 2000 elephants or over 900 double-decker buses.
All UK households switching off their lights for 71 minutes.
(* as of 14 May 2007)
All of this work and your great response led to our receiving the Innovation of the Year award 2007 at the Agent Achievement Awards.
Here are some other interesting facts from our carbon offset scheme.
On 27th February we sold a record 114 offsets and on 17th December a record 15% of customers were carbonwise
14% of short haul and 4% of long-haul passengers choose to offset
The 'greenest' route was London - Edinburgh, where 22% of customers offset their emissions
This money serves to make a real difference on the ground in developing countries. We are currently supporting two projects, in the Bahamas and Nicaragua.
Project Update: Nicaragua - stoves
We are working with Prolena, a local non-governmental organisation (NGO) that is promoting the use of more efficient cooking stoves.
Prolena have been unable to increase operations due to lack of access to capital. Funds from Climate Care have allowed them to purchase land and build new headquarters, reducing their cost base and releasing more funds to build stoves.
They have sold over 200 stoves to date under the Climate Care scheme and the numbers are now increasing in line with the project plan. The target is 3,000 over three years.
Each stove in Nicaragua is expected to save on average 2 tonnes of CO2 per year for at least three years (like a return flight to Miami)
Climate Care have followed up the work with research to measure and verify the effectiveness of the new stoves, to monitor the amounts of wood (and therefore CO2) being saved, using two local consultants.
Project Update: Bahamas - biodiesel
Following their pilot scheme, Cape Systems - the company behind the biodiesel project - have been raising funds, planning for project implementation and marketing the oil to get contracts in place.
All necessary business documents have been secured, site planning is complete, and technology specified – the project is awaiting final government approval
The project has its other investors in place and they will be ordering the equipment to install shortly (about July this year)
Over the next five years the biodiesel project has the potential to supply 10% of the Bahamas' road diesel needs, saving a predicted 11,000 tonnes of CO2.
Coming up...
Soon you'll be able to offset your carbon emissions when you build your own break through our
City Breaks page. We're hoping to have this in place by the end of June (watch this space).
Be carbonwise - offset every time you fly.
