Malaysia is the rising star of South-East Asian tourism, a nation looking to the future while cherishing the ways of the past. Centuries of trade have resulted in a vibrant mix of Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous tribal cultures, creating a veritable melting pot of peoples, traditions and religions. The magnificent landscape is no less diverse dense jungles, soaring peaks and lush tropical rainforests harbour an abundant flora and fauna. Tropical island resorts and endless white, sandy beaches offer a taste of paradise, while beneath warm coral seas, world-class dive sites await exploration.

Kuala Lumpur, the countrys showpiece, is a city of skyscrapers, contrasting vividly with historic Malacca, the ancient heart of the Malay culture. Old colonial hill resorts offer refuge from summer heat, while exotic Penang island offers a heady mix of traditional culture and resort fun. Beyond peninsular Malaysia, yet more delights await on the stunning Langkawi islands and with the unique tribal cultures of Sabah and Sarawak, Malaysias provinces on Borneo.

Year-round sunshine, superb scenery and a relaxed atmosphere ensure Malaysias continued reputation as a first-class beach destination. Recent promotions of the country as a shopping paradise and eco-tourism centre will doubtless draw many more people to discover the fabulous diversity of this beautiful country.

  • Turtle Islands Park
Designated a Marine Park in 1977, Sabah's Turtle Islands Park is a paradise based on three islands - Selingan, Gulisan and Bakkungan Kechil - north of Sandakan in the Sulu Sea. Known particularly for being the breeding, nesting and hatching grounds of not one but two species of turtle - the Greens and the Hawksbills - the park is also ideal for swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving.
  • Kinabalu Park
Malaysia's first World Heritage Site, designated by UNESCO in December 2000 for its "outstanding universal values," Kinabalu Park is dominated by the imposing Mount Kinabalu - at 4095 metres (13,435 feet), the highest peak in South-East Asia.
  • Central Market
Held at the confluence of the Gombak Rivers which gave the city its name, the Central Market opened its doors in 1936 as Kuala Lumpur's main fresh produce market. More recently, when three new markets in the suburbs threatened its primacy, the authorities allowed the renovation of the site into a "cultural and festival market" and, once again it has become central to the city's shopping needs.
  • Petronas Twin Towers Sky Lobby
Topped out in 1998 and officially opened in 1999, Kuala Lumpur's 88-storey Petronas Twin Towers together form the one of the world's tallest buildings - standing a resplendent 1483 feet (452 metres) high. American architect Cesar Pelli created this beautiful building with obvious Islamic influence, including curved and pointed bays to create a scalloped facade emulating temple towers.
