Itinerary
Day 1 - Arrival in Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Upon arrival at Phnom Penh International Aiport, transfer to the joining point hotel. There will be a group meeting in the early evening.
If you arrive early, there will be sightseeing information on the notice board at the hotel.
Day 2 - Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital, is set on a major junction of the Mekong and Tonle Sap Rivers and boasts some fine examples of French-inspired architecture. You visit the chilling Tuol Sleng torture centre and the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek for some insight into Cambodia's darkest days before enjoying free time to uncover the country's brighter attractions. You can explore the Silver Pagoda, the Royal Palace, the National Museum or the Russian Market. Sisowath Quay, along the riverside, boasts some beautiful old French buildings, a variety of good restaurants and coffee shops as well as a great view of the bustling river and street traffic.
Day 3-4 - Battambang
Battambang, Cambodia's second-largest city, is an attractive riverside town with traces of French elegance, friendly Khmer people and well-preserved colonial architecture. There is time to explore the town and to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. You'll also have the chance to sample the joys of Cambodian karaoke. Depending on group wishes, there is also an opportunity to take a mouth-watering cooking class, a leisurely walk along the river, or explore the local life and surrounding countryside.
Day 5-7 - Siem Reap/ Angkor Wat
Leaving Battambang, you travel by boat to Siem Reap via the Tonle Sap Lake (During the dry season, the water levels fall too low so you will travel by public bus instead).
On days 6 and 7, you will temple-hop from sunrise to sunset to make the most of your visit to the world-famous Angkor complex with your local guide. These temples were built between the 9th and 13th centuries when the Khmer Empire was the pre-eminent influence in South-East Asia. The temples were believed to represent the cosmic world and were set in perfect balance, symmetry and composition. The intricately carved bas-reliefs and architectural designs are mind-blowing and there are spectacular photographic opportunities at any time of day. The ruins are scattered over an area of some 160 sq km, but the main cluster of temples is close to Siem Reap so you will have plenty of time to fully appreciate the great archaeological sites of Angkor Wat, the Bayon and the jungle-covered Ta Prohm.
Day 8 - Kompong Cham
This morning, you travel to peaceful Kampong Cham, a little riverside town where you stay the night. In the afternoon, you hop into bicycle saddles for a tour of a nearby island and get a closer look at rural Cambodian life.
Day 9-10 - Kampot
Leaving Kampong Cham, you will travel via Phnom Penh to Kampot. With it's faded colonial elegance and relaxed atmosphere, the riverside town of Kampot is a perfect place to break your journey.
Famous for its pepper, Kampot supplied most French restaurants with this vital spice for many years during colonial rule. Today, the region is more renowned for its plantations of durian, a spiky, pungent fruit that either incites adoration or sheer loathing. Try it if you dare! There's also delicate tunes to enjoy at Kampot's Traditional Music School, where orphans and disabled kids are taught to play instruments, sing or dance and you might consider indulging in a traditional massage this evening.
On day 10, you venture out on your countryside tour - This tour gives you the opportunity to discover the jewels of the Kampots province countryside, including local salt fields, rice fields, pepper plantations and the famous Phnom Chhnork caves. You also visit different villages along the way where you will have the opportunity to talk to villagers and witness their daily lives.
Day 11-13 - Sihanoukville
On the morning of day 11 you travel from Kampot to Sihanoukville, a journey which takes 3 hours. Named for the Cambodian royal family, this an area with miles of untouched beaches and warm, welcoming people. Weather permitting, you take a boat to one of the nearby islands where you are free to relax among swaying palms, white sands and blue waters. There is also plenty of time to explore the town, the market, the pagodas and to take in the view from Sihanoukville's surrounding hills.
Day 14-15 - Phnom Penh
A bus ride returns you to Cambodia's capital city by midday, leaving the afternoon free for further exploration or maybe some last-minute shopping.
As no activities are planned for day 15, you may leave at any time.
