Cotopaxi, located close to Latacunga, is Ecuador's most popular national park.
At 5897 metres snow-capped Cotopaxi is the highest active volcano in the world and the park's main attraction. The remainder of the terrain is made up primarily of high-altitude grassland.
The park offers excellent hiking, climbing and mountain biking opportunities, along with visitor facilities including cabins, hiking trails and a campsite. Temperatures vary between freezing and 15°C, so take some warm clothes. Besides the Cotopaxi Volcano, Rumiñahui (4712 metres) and Morurco (4840 metres) offer alternative hiking options.
The park is also home to a variety of wildlife including condors, deer, bears, foxes, paramo wolves, Andean gulls and hummingbirds.
