Chile is situated in South America, bounded by Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, the Antarctic and the Pacific Ocean. Home of the Andes mountain range, it is a thin ribbon of land, 4200km (2610 miles) long and nowhere more than 180km (115 miles) wide. Arica, near the northern border with Peru, is an excellent tourist centre. It has good beaches and the famous San Marcos Cathedral. Chile's central region and the islands feature the snow-capped peaks of the Andes, rolling green fields, vineyards and orange groves. The modern capital city, Santiago, has a good range of hotels to suit all tastes and pockets. Easter Island, west of the mainland, is famous for the Moai, gigantic stone figures found all over the island. National dishes include empanada (meat, chicken or fish, with onions, eggs, raisins and olives inside a flour pastry) and humitas (seasoned corn paste, wrapped in corn husks and boiled). Chile is, of course, famous for its wine and pisco is a powerful liqueur also distilled from grapes. While many restaurants and hotels offer entertainment there are also a number of independent discotheques, nightclubs and late night cabaret spots.

  • Torres del Paine National Park
Spanning both Chile and Argentina, Patagonia has always had a romantic, slightly unreal image, perpetuated by writers such as Bruce Chatwin (who came here in search of mythical monsters). This stunningly beautiful, wild and sparsely-populated land has an almost inexhaustible wealth of incredible natural phenomena, but the jewel in the Chilean crown is the Torres del Paine National Park, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.
  • San Pedro de Atacama
The village of San Pedro de Atacama stands at 2450 metres in the middle of one of the driest places in the world - the Atacama Desert - and is an ideal base for visiting the many nearby attractions.
  • Cruise the Patagonian Fjords
Take the scenic route between Puerto Montt and Puerto Natales on a spectacular cruise through the Patagonian fjords. On this four-day journey (in either direction) you encounter penguins, icebergs and volcanoes in one of South America's most beautiful regions.
  • Lauca National Park
The Lauca National Park is northern Chile's natural treasure, a Global Biosphere Reserve that covers 137,883 hectares of the high plateau of the Tarapaca region.
  • Easter Island
Easter Island is one of the world's most famous, but least visited, archaeological sites - a small, hilly, now treeless island of volcanic origin, adorned with scores of strange statues.
