Each Wednesday night cinephiles gather at the Den of Cin in New York to indulge in a bit of movieoke. This tone-deaf bunch aren't bothered about crooning their hearts out to Tom Jones and Frank Sinatra. No, they get up and re-enact their favourite scenes from films in front of a beer-fuelled and baying audience!

Movieoke was born when Anastasia Ariana Fite, a filmmaker living in New York City, made a 25-minute film about a character who could only communicate using direct quotes from movies. Despite the character's sad ending, Anastasia decided that re-enacting films would be a great way to bring people together.

The format is simple. Participants merely choose their scene, stick on the DVD with subtitles and get to it. The film is projected on a large screen for the audience and there is a small monitor for the performer to keep a track of things.

Performances have ranged from full-blown mimicry to improvisation. If you're a little shy, just drag some friends up too. It's all done in a fun spirit and is guaranteed to give you an evening to remember.
