The Emirates are bordered to the north by the Gulf and the Musandam Peninsula, to the east by Oman, to the south and west by Saudi Arabia and to the northwest by Qatar. The land is mountainous and mostly desert. Abu Dhabi is flat and sandy, and within its boundaries is the Buraimi Oasis. Dubai has a 16km- (10 mile-) deep-water creek, giving it the popular name of Pearl of the Gulf. A predominantly modern city, Abu Dhabi nevertheless retains some of its ancient past. The Diwan Amiri (White Fort) was built in 1793 and still survives. There are many mosques, from the huge blue mosque on the corner of the Corniche to the smaller one in the centre of Khalifa Street Roundabout, surrounded by trees. Dubai has outstanding sporting and conference facilities. Bur Dubai, the original town, has old buildings, atmospheric alleyways and markets.
  • Jumeirah Mosque
The Jumeirah Mosque is the most photographed building in the city and an impressive example of modern Islamic architecture with its two minarets. It was built along medieval Fatimid lines, entirely of stone. It is particularly attractive at night, when subtle lighting increases its dramatic effect.
  • Bastakia District
The Bastakia district, on the waterfront east of the Dubai Souk and Diwan, features a number of traditional wind-tower houses - precursors to air conditioning.
  • Grand Mosque
Dubai's multi-domed Grand Mosque boasts the city's tallest minaret (70 metres) and remains the hub of religious life. Although non-Muslims are not allowed inside, it's still worth going to see its impressive exterior.
  • Ski Dubai
Following man-made islands, underwater hotels and rotating restaurants, Ski Dubai is the Emirates' latest extravaganza, bringing an Alpine experience to the middle of Dubai's desert. This monumental indoor snowdome has a capacity of 1500 guests and is one of the largest in the world.
  • Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House
The Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House is one of the oldest in Dubai, as well as one of the best examples of traditional architecture. Built in 1896, the one-time ruler of the city used the house to monitor trade in and out of the country. It was opened as a museum in 1986.
