The Bastakia district, on the waterfront east of the Dubai Souk and Diwan, features a number of traditional wind-tower houses - precursors to air conditioning.
Built in the late 19th century, the area was once the home of wealthy Persian merchants, most of them lured to Dubai by its relaxed trade tariffs. Today it is one of Dubai's most picturesque heritage sites and conservation areas, well worth a wander around to lap up the distinctly Arabian architecture.
