(Ages at time of travel)
In 430 BC, when Herodotos exclaimed in awe over the magnificent monuments in Egypt, many of them were already 2500 years old. Most, from the pyramids of Giza to the astonishingly beautiful temples of Karnak or Philae, or the painted tombs in the Valley of the Kings, can still be visited today. The sheer age of this great civilisation is mind-blowing.

With high levels of heat, confusion, hassle and stomach bugs to contend with, Egypt is not an easy country for travellers, although greatly improved security measures mean anti-Western activities have been largely curtailed. And for those prepared to brave a few discomforts, this extraordinary country assaults the senses.

The life-giving Nile pours across the map, feeding an emerald ribbon of irrigated fields adjacent to villages shaded by date palms. Whether on a cruise ship or traditional felucca, life on the water is a constant visual feast, while the few huge, dusty cities Cairo, Alexandria, Aswan and Luxor are a babble of exotic sounds and smells.

Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheik, on the Red Sea coast, are doors to a magical underwater world of technicolour fish and coral favoured by divers, while other adventurous travellers head inland. Here, you can discover monasteries amid the arid mountains of Sinai or the distant desert oases, homes of the hardy nomads whose camel trains still wander the Saharan sands.
  • Siwa Oasis
Alexander the Great trekked all the way here to visit the Oracle of Amun - many say that the magic and mystery he sought is still there. Siwa Oasis is an Egyptian gem.
  • Coloured Canyon
Sinai's Coloured Canyon is around a kilometre long and full of magnificent rock formations. Formed by the elements over centuries, the walls cascade with colours and a natural maze has been formed that is excellent for exploring and taking photographs.
  • The Egyptian Antiquities Museum
Although an incredible amount of Ancient Egyptian remains appear to have migrated across the world, appropriated on somewhat dubious credentials by the nations who funded the vast sweep of digs in the 19th century, the Egyptian Antiquities Museum in Cairo has managed to keep hold of some of the country's finest treasures. Now a century old, even more treasures have been dug up from its bowels for viewing.
  • The Pyramids at Giza
The only one of the Seven Wonders of the World still left standing, the three pyramids of Giza, part of the necropolis of Memphis, are a sight which dwarfs even the proudest of modern buildings. The Pyramids are also home to the Sphinx, perhaps the best known monument in the whole of Egypt.
  • Mount Sinai
If it wasn't for the fantastically rich history surrounding the Sinai peninsular, few would brave a trek to this remote and arid mountain region in southern Egypt. But for Jews, Christians, Muslims (and geography fanatics) alike, it is an important place of pilgrimage.
