The Cairo Opera House was opened in 1988, 17 years after the city's first opera house burnt down. It has a main hall seating 1200 people, a smaller hall seating 500 and an outdoor theatre seating 600, with the most sophisticated technical and stage facilities in Africa and the Middle East.

In addition to welcoming the world's finest opera, dance and music companies, it also promotes its affiliated companies, including the Cairo Symphony Orchestra, Cairo Ballet Company, Cairo Opera Company, Cairo Opera Choir, Arabic Music Ensemble, National Arabic Music Ensemble and the Cairo Opera Children's Choir.

On the first floor of the complex, the Opera Museum hosts a large collection of historic documents relating to the first opera house as well as objects representing recent performances.
