Description
Venue: Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park When: Daily
Escape the city to enjoy the fresh air of the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. Opened in 2002, it is Scotland's first national park and the second largest in Britain, comprising 1865 square kilometres of rolling lowland to the south (near Glasgow) and high mountains to the north. The 350km boundary encloses some of Scotland's most beautiful countryside - lochs, rivers and forests, dramatic hills and beautiful skies, criss-crossed by footpaths, bridle paths and cycle tracks.
The best way to begin an exploration of this treasured landscape is to visit the state-of-the-art visitor centre on the shores of Loch Lomond in Balloch. The Gateway Centre is staffed by National Park and Tourist Board experts who can offer information, guided walks, nature trails and maps of the park. There is an easily accessible woodland and loch-side stroll to start you off.
The park comprises 21 Munros (hills over 3000 feet), 20 Corbetts (summits of between 2500 and 3000 feet), two forest parks and 57 sites designated for their special nature conservation value. More than 14,000 people live within the park's boundaries.
The National Park has four key aims: to conserve and enhance the natural and cultural heritage of the area; to promote sustainable use of natural resources; to promote public understanding and enjoyment of the area's special qualities and to promote sustainable economic and social development of local communities.
