Scotlands scenery is as varied as it is beautiful. Rugged mountain peaks sweep down to breathtaking lochs glistening in remote glens like Glen Affric near Inverness and Loch Trool in Galloway. A straggling coastline, with white sandy beaches, sheltered bays and rocky cliffs looks out to the remote islands of the Atlantic. To the south, the rolling hills of the Borders, lush lowland pastures and extensive woodlands present a softer beauty.

Scotlands capital, Edinburgh, is among the outstanding cities of the world, where the Medieval Old Town contrasts with the elegant Georgian New Town. Other towns, notably Glasgow, display a wealth of Victorian architecture. Everywhere youll find ancient castles and houses, prehistoric forts, stone circles and burial mounds, particularly at the Neolithic Heart of Orkney, Scotlands latest World Heritage Site.

Scotlands rich musical heritage has feet tapping to bagpipes, fiddles and accordions. The best Celtic music can be heard at either the Girvan Traditional Folk Festival in May or the Newcastleton Festival in July. Scotland is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Play golf on the worlds most famous course at St Andrews. Go fishing, sailing, diving, or join the walkers, cyclists and climbers on the hills, in woodlands and on deserted country lanes. Finally, at the end of the day, relax with Scotlands greatest export, a dram of fine malt whisky.
  • Burrell Collection
The Burrell Collection consists of a collection of 8000 precious objets d'art which formerly belonged to the millionaire shipping magnate, Sir William Burrell (1861-1951). Upon his death, he bequeathed it to the city of Glasgow and it is now housed in Pollok House surrounded by 1,000 acres of parkland belonging to Pollok Park.
  • Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park
Escape the city to enjoy the fresh air of the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. Opened in 2002, it is Scotland's first national park and the second largest in Britain, comprising 1865 square kilometres of rolling lowland to the south (near Glasgow) and high mountains to the north. The 350km boundary encloses some of Scotland's most beautiful countryside - lochs, rivers and forests, dramatic hills and beautiful skies, criss-crossed by footpaths, bridle paths and cycle tracks.
  • Edinburgh Castle
Britain's second most popular tourist attraction, Edinburgh Castle dominates the city and is the site for the annual Edinburgh Military Tattoo and the traditional end-of-festival fireworks at the Edinburgh International Festival, both in August. But the museums, crown jewels and historic battlements are worth visiting all year round.
  • Cairngorms National Park
One of Britain's newest national parks, Cairngorms National Park is country's largest, totalling an impressive 3800 square kilometres (that's 1400 square miles) across Scotland's Highlands and Grampian regions. Officially opened in September 2003 and with its administrative centre close to its most northern point, in Grantown-on-Spey, the park is home to not only a quarter of Scotland's native woodland, but also a quarter of the Britain's endangered species, and the biggest continuous swathe of near-natural vegetation in the country.
  • Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre
The Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre, home to a unique exhibition of Kinemats (kinetic sculptures), is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Glasgow. Tiny carved figures and pieces of old scrap dance to haunting music and synchronised lighting, as machinery and shadows come alive.
