An award-winning museum set in a magnificent Victorian building, the Thackray Museum opened in 1997 and is one of Europe's largest medical museums. The galleries take you through the social history of medicine, as well as the impact it has had on our lives.
From the Victorian operating theatre to the wonders of modern surgery, the galleries, collections and interactive displays bring to life the history of health and disease, treatments and cure, medical discoveries, equipment and technology.
You'll also get to explore life in Leeds in the 1840s, by stepping into a reconstructed Victorian street. Here you can follow the lives, ailments and treatments of eight Victorian characters - you make the choices that determine their survival, amongst the rats, fleas and bedbugs!
The Disease in Retreat gallery charts the discovery of vaccines, antibiotics and other drugs and explains how we have benefited and what new diseases are challenging the doctors of today. You'll see the history of surgery, from the barbaric techniques of early amputation in the Hannah Dyson experience through to medical advances such as keyhole surgery and artificial organs.
Other attractions include finding out what it's like to be pregnant by trying on an "Empathy Belly" or walking through a giant gut and finding out why your tummy rumbles. The John F Wilkinson gallery houses an impressive collection of more than 600 ornate earthenware drug jars, which once lined the shelves of apothecaries' shops from the 16th to 18th centuries. Designed to hold an amazing array of ingredients, medicines and pills, the jars were the collections of just one man over a period of 40 years.
