Description

Venue: Lulworth Cove    When: Daily

A stroll along the Dorset Coast would be incomplete without a visit to one its star attractions - Lulworth Cove.

Viewed from high above, the Cove at Lulworth, on the Purbeck Heritage Coast of Southern England, looks like it was caused by a neat chunk being chipped from the coastline. Local children are sometimes led to believe it was the result of a hungry giant's snack.

But the truth turns out to be less romantic - the near circular hole was actually created by the waves of the hungry English Channel. Erosion over the centuries has gnawed away at the soft chalky rocks lining this southern stretch of coast, until the harder limestone lying behind offered some protection. The net result is a stunning example of geomorphology and geological folding (exposing Jurassic rocks), that attracts about a million visitors from all over the world each year.

Whether you are a hiker, ornithologist, botanist, archaeologist, geology fanatic or a humble holiday maker, this protected area has loads to offer. Indeed, pirates and smugglers, the poet Keats and (perhaps) Napoleon are associated with this magic place - the fantastic (albeit small) Visitor's Centre tells you all you need to know about its rich history.

The magic doesn't stop at Lulworth either - the coastline continues to be stunning on either side, and offers dramatic coast structures, such as the stack of Durdle Door. Many take the coastal path route along the cliff edge - although access isn't always open, so you need to check in advance. Another good way to experience the area is in a boat, and daily trips run during July and August. Given the vagaries of the English weather, this is the best time to visit.
