Description
Venue: Garson Farm When: Daily
Garson Farm still merits the National Pick-Your-Own (PYO) award it received in 1997. Its 180 acres of PYO are accredited by the Les Routiers/NRA scheme and it's the largest PYO in England. The farm is just 15 miles from London and close to Esher, so pop down for an unbeatable selection of fruit, vegetables and farm shop goodies.
During the peak of the summer season pickers can choose from a number of soft fruits, including strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries, blackcurrants and redcurrants. Vegetables include a spectacularly colourful array of yellow courgettes, black cabbages, yellow French beans and green and orange cauliflower. They even have courgette flowers - superb for dipping in tempura mix and then deep frying.
The farm shop, which has grown to quite a size over the years, has its own bakery, fish counter and butcher. The butcher is a Kew Guild award winner and stocks some unbelieveable Aberdeen Angus. Other delectable items include home-made ice creams, sunflowers, jam and pots of the farm honey as well an enticing range of frozen home-made meals made from local farm produce.
To meet consumers' demands, supermarket fruits and vegetables are often temporarily placed in temperature-controlled environments, which can have detrimental effects on their taste and vitamin content. Buying from a farm means that consumers can pick produce according to their taste and at reduced prices. The farmer, in turn, benefits from the custom at retail prices and can concentrate on growing more fresh quality produce for the years to come.
