The Philharmonia Orchestra continues to celebrate the centenary of Olivier Messiaens birth with another concert in their series with Southbank Centre, From the Canyons to the Stars: The Music of Olivier Messiaen.
On Tuesday 21 October, the Philharmonia will be conducted by one of Messiaens pupils, George Benjamin, who will conduct one of his own works alongside Messiaens Chronochromie, which is a ten-part homage to the Alps, full of luminous percussion and shifting dense string parts.
Both Benjamin and Xenakis were pupils of Messiaen in Paris, and their respective works performed this evening also explore time and colour whilst Ligetis Atmosphères focuses on the absence of time.
