Accommodation

4* Prince of Caunos Hotel - 7 or 14 nights – Bed & Breakfast – Dalyan – Turkey

Location: Dalyan

Dalyan is a charming small town of unequalled natural beauty offering a taste of traditional Turkish life. A gentle river flows down from the pine-covered hills through reed beds, overlooked by dramatic Lycian rock tombs, to the sea. Some of these are inaccessible and remain almost untouched since their creation thousands of years ago.

The ruins of the ancient city of Caunos stand nearby on a broad slope overlooking the sea and river delta. The acropolis, theatre, four temples and baths bear witness to the city’s long and varied past. Since many places of attraction are reached only by boat, the area remains unspoilt. Take a trip on the river to view the idyllic countryside to its best advantage. The river delta of Dalyan is home to many species of plant and wildlife and this is the last remaining home of the Mediterranean Turtle, an endangered species.

Everything in the town is within walking distance and there are a variety of shops catering for all your requirements, a small market and some excellent fish restaurants on the riverfront as well as a number of relaxed bars. Beach lovers can take the short boat or dolmus ride to the spectacular 7km sandbar known as Iztuzu Beach, approximately 20 minutes away by dolmus or 40 minutes by boat. During the summer months – May until August – the Loggerhead and Caretta Caretta turtles nest on this sandy beach so it has been designated as a special conservation area to protect these rare species. Great care must be taken not to disturb their nests during this period so visiting times are restricted from 8am to 6pm.

No holiday to Dalyan would be complete without a boat trip to the Sultaniye thermal springs and mud baths nearby. Apart from being great fun wallowing in the warm mud, it contains a number of minerals, which are said to be extremely beneficial for the skin, claiming to knock years off your appearance!

Approximate transfer time: 30 minutes

Your holiday price includes: Return flights, local transfers, accommodation on a bed and breakfast basis and the services of a local representative.

Please note: Half board is available at a supplement of £49 per person per week, please request on your booking and our reservations team will add this onto your booking for you.

Things to do in and around Dalyan

Dalyan is a great destination for those who want to experience traditional Turkey and the famously unspoilt Iztuzu Beach, a dream for beach lovers. For those who want to explore the surrounding area, Dalyan provides an ideal base and we organise a full programme of tours with English-speaking guides, please speak to your representative in resort for full details.

A haven for nature-lovers
Altogether there are some 38,500 hectares of protected conservation land in Dalyan, representing 10% of the total conservation area in Turkey. This includes the seven kilometre long sandbar known as Iztuzu Beach, the nesting ground for the endangered loggerhead turtle. Dalyan provides a unique natural environment with its mixture of fresh and saltwater wetlands, home to a wealth of water and bird wildlife, including species such as the sparrow hawk, crane, kingfisher and jay. The stork is also native to the area and migrates here in March where it rests until the end of August.

Saklikent
Known in Turkish as the ‘hidden city’, Saklikent is a stunning mountain gorge, about 3 metres wide, between rocks as high as 300 metres – the second longest canyon in Europe. The cold waters which gush from an underground spring into a river running through the gorge give you the opportunity to cool off.

Fethiye, Ölüdeniz and Kayaköy
A great day out to explore the beautiful Fethiye region. Fethiye itself is a charming traditional harbour town where the tomb of Amyntas, which dates from the 4th century BC, overlooks the everyday hustle and bustle of fishermen, sailors and tradesmen going about their business. Just the other side of a pine-clad hill is the stunning beach and beautiful blue lagoon of Ölüdeniz, the most photographed in Turkey. Round off with a visit to the eerie ‘ghost down’ of Kayaköy, long since abandoned.

Ephesus and Pamukkale - 2 days
See two of Turkey’s most famous sights. Ephesus is the best preserved of Turkey’s historic sites where you can follow in the footsteps of the Virgin Mary, St. Paul, Antony and Cleopatra. Visit the remains of the Temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, wander the grand streets and marvel at the Great Theatre, which seats 25,000 spectators. Pamukkale literally translated as the ‘cotton castle’ appears from a distance as a shimmering, white fairytale castle. Created by limestone laden thermal springs, mineral deposits have transformed cascading waterfalls into stalactites and a magical landscape of white rocks and shallow pools.
