Over the centuries it grew in size and power and was granted the rights of a free city in 1218. In 1351 the city joined the Everlasting League of the Confederates, and since then has grown in importance. During the 19 C. Alfred Escher transformed Zurich into a trade and business center (machine and textile industry, banks, insurance companies and tourism).
Zurich has a well-deserved reputation as a shoppers paradise. It is also home to several highly renowned auction houses which have given the ciy an enviable international reputation. The main shopping area is concentrated within one square kilometer in the heart of the city, which means it is easily covered on foot, and includes the famous Bahnhofstrasse - one of the most beautiful shopping streets in Europe, where you will find elegant boutiques, department stores and specialist shops.
