Chic resort
The world famous, jet set resort of Gstaad lies in the picturesque Bernese Oberland, attracting a spectacularly wealthy clientele and representing the epitome of sophisticated Swiss glamour. Aside of its many swanky shops, the village remains true to its traditional style; its wonderful collection of old wooden buildings lie in stunning mountain scenery, surrounded by a substantial 250km of skiing. The many bars, restaurants and clubs are as smart as can be expected, with prices to match, although après ski can also be found on a more affordable level. Non-skiers can enjoy such diverse activities as paragliding and hot air balloon rides.
Most of Gstaad's slopes are excellent for beginners and intermediates, and those looking for variety and challenge will appreciate the Gstaad Super Ski Region pass, offering more piste than can possibly be skied. This wonderfully extensive "ticket to ride" covers 10 linked resorts including Chateau d'Oex, Rougemont, Sannen, Villars and Leysin. Snowboarders are accommodated with snowboard parks and a popular 140km cross-country track can also be found. As befitting such an upmarket resort, heli-skiing is also available for the really adventurous.
