Description
Venue: Loro Parque When: Daily
Tenerife's mega theme park, Loro Parque is a must-see for the whole family. It claims the world's largest Penguinarium and Europe's biggest Dolphinarium, as well as an aquarium, various exotic animals and shows, a Thai village, an Orquidarium, high-definition cinema, a Porcelain Museum and fauna from around the world.
At the entrance of the park is the Thai Pavilion, which opens onto a world of flora and fauna and represents the strong links held between Thailand and Tenerife since the visit by the Prince of Siam in 1913.
Planet Penguin is a huge replica of Antarctica, reproducing climate, ocean, Antarctic light and a rocky peninsular, surrounded by chilled seawater. On this, the focal point, light rain and snow fall daily, creating 12 tons of ice. Visitors can see king penguins, gentoo penguins, rockhoppers and Humboldt penguins feeding and minding their young in this near-to-natural environment.
The dolphins at Loro Parque have plenty of space to move around; there's a panoramic breeding pool, one for exhibitions, and three pools for resting/quarantine. The dolphins aren't the only ones to be exhibitionists though. Californian sea lions demonstrate their underwater agility whilst the parrots and macaws show off their skills in the air. Other animals at the park include chimpanzees, gorillas, Bengal tigers, jaguars and Mississippi alligators. There's also an aquarium with salt and freshwater fish, from the piranhas of the South American Amazon to typical Canarian Island species and coral reef fish. Loro Parque is committed to conservation and scientific study, so all fauna are kept in as natural surroundings as possible and are well monitored and cared for.
As well as the animals, there is an orchid house with several varieties of the beautiful blooms, a high-definition domed cinema where you can discover more about the natural world, a porcelain museum with examples of the finest china from around the world from the last century, all collected by Loro Parque's general administrator, Wolfgang Kiessling, and numerous restaurants and cafés.
