Description
Venue: Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre When: Daily
Most people think of Vienna's Lippizaners before Andalusia, but the Austrian horses are direct descendants of the Andalusian breed. Spanish horse breeding has been preserved over the centuries, retaining pure blood lines, and these horses can still be seen at the school.
The school has a practical role in training horses and horsemen in doma va quera and doma classica - dressage, coach driving, farriery and leather work. There are tours of the 60 stables around a cobbled courtyard and tack room. The highlights of a visit are the spirited horse ballet displays (and the rehearsals are just as good).
If you can wait until May, there is a fully-fledged annual equestrian ballet, featuring choreography adapted from the training exercises. Performed to traditional Spanish music with costumes which date back to the 18th century, this is a sight not to be missed.
NB: Shows take place on different days throughout the year. To avoid disappointment, please contact the venue before arranging a visit.
