Description
Venue: Middachten Castle When: Daily
Beautiful Middachten Castle in De Steeg is part of an estate that goes back to the 12th century, when it was in the hands of the Middachten family. All the buildings on the estate are easily recognisable by their red-and-white window shutters: the heraldic colours of the family.
The castle was reconstructed in 1698 after a turbulent history of destruction and war. The gardens were landscaped with an obvious Versailles inspiration and the orangerie, herbal and rose gardens and open-air theatre have made the modern estate a favoured location for weddings.
Visitors can stroll in the "Unholy Forest," which according to legend was the setting for a Romeo and Juliet-style love story involving Arnoud, the leader of a gang of brutal highwaymen and Gertrude, the beautiful daughter of the Lord of the castle.
During summer, the castle has limited opening hours in July during the Rose Festival and is otherwise only open to group visits.
If you like elegant stately homes and gorgeous formal gardens, you will surely enjoy a day out here.
