Description
Venue: Gran Caffè Quadri When: Daily
The elegant, original and world-famous Gran Caffè Quadri is one of the oldest public salons in Venice and was the first to introduce coffee to the city. Founded in 1775 by Giorgio Quadri and his wife, it has been serving up the "hot black beverage" for centuries, combining the exquisite aroma with excellent views over St Mark's Square.
Today Quadri is still going strong, offering far more than stylish drinks in a romantic setting. At carnival time in February its prime location puts visitors in a first-class position for the spectacular parades of original Venetian masks, and it keeps up the creative vibe during the Biennale with various collections of visual art. Throughout the year there are regular orchestra sessions, art exhibitions and other cultural events, making the average €5 a drink well worth the experience.
Upstairs, you can dine by candlelight in the exclusive restaurant, set up by the Vivarini brothers in 1830. Then, if the food meets your expectations, you can replicate the culinary affair back home by taking up one of the courses run by chef Bettiol.
Both restaurant and cafe are open every day, except for the winter season when the venue closes on Mondays.
